The artist who reproduced this Rembrandt's etching was Leopold Flameng (1831-1911). Painter, illustrator and engraver Léopold Flameng was born in Brussels of French parents and studied under Luigi Calamatta and Jean Gigoux. He is particularly well known for his engravings after works of art by painters including van Eyck, Rembrandt, Delacroix and Ingres; his skills were highly praised during his lifetime.
The first series of these replicas where published in the 1850’s by French art critic Charles Blanc (1813-1882). These 19th century antique replica's were produced using Rembrandt's technique (printed from a copper-plate on Japanese paper) and are almost indistinguishable from the 17th century originals, even for the trained eye.
