Pieter Bleeker’s (1819-1878) Atlas Ichtyologique des Indes orientales Néêrlandaises is one of the most lavish books on fishes ever published in the Netherlands. It covers over 12 000 descriptions of specimens of fishes found in the seas of Southeast Asia. The work was published in 36 volumes between 1862 and 1878.
The work contained over 1500 chromolithographic plates. Chromolithography is a process in which multiple stones are used, for each color a separate stone.
Initially there were only 60 subscribers for this work, which make these plates very rare.
